This course is designed for graduate students interested in conducting rigorous research in the economics of education and related fields, including labor economics, public economics, and industrial organization. We will cover foundations and recent innovations across a range of topics spanning early childhood to postsecondary education, including students, teachers, and schools in the educational production function; school choice, information, and competition; human capital versus signaling; college admissions; and the pecuniary and non-pecuniary returns to colleges and majors.
Students should be comfortable with the core material from the first-year economics PhD sequence, especially econometrics, price theory, and basic game theory. Cannot enroll in BUSN 33930 if ECON 36700 taken previously.
