This is a course on open-economy macroeconomics and key topics in international financial policymaking. We will discuss the linkage of exchange rates and interest rates, how businesses react to exchange rate risk, the choice of exchange rate regime including monetary unions like the euro area, international borrowing/lending and current accounts, and financial crises. We will also touch on policy-relevant areas, such as how IMF programs and central bank swap lines work, cross-border payments, the global role of the dollar, trade policy, sanctions, and geoeconomics.
Business 33050 or equivalent is recommended, but not required. Cannot enroll in BUSN 33502 if BUSN 20230 taken previously.
Based on a combination of class lectures, textbook chapters, and newspaper and magazine articles.
Based on a combination of quizzes, a mid-term, and a final exam. It is possible there will be a homework assignment. Cannot be taken pass/fail. No auditors.
